The composition ‘Anthem of Ukraine’
Role: composer
Location: online
Mariia Yaremak’s arrangement of the Ukrainian national anthem has become one of the most resonant musical interpretations since the start of the full-scale invasion. The composer created this version as a cinematic soundtrack intended to reflect the grandeur and tragedy of the events the country is going through. The work has achieved massive reach online: it has garnered over 80 million streams worldwide and has been shared more than 50 million times on social media.
A major milestone in popularising this arrangement was the large-scale charity concert at Warsaw’s ROMA Theatre on 30 March 2022, where Tina Karol opened the evening by performing the anthem accompanied by the INSO-Lviv orchestra. Mariia prepared the orchestral score especially for this performance, which carried deep symbolism – only female musicians were present on stage, symbolising the indomitable Ukrainian spirit.
The piece exists in several variations, each with its own mood:
– Orchestral version: majestic and emotional – it has formed the basis for many international performances.
– Album recording: the anthem was included in the ‘Sounds of the Homeland’ series, where it was recorded outdoors in the mountains at dawn.
– Version for bandura: the collection ‘Ukrainian Fantasy’ features an arrangement for two banduras and a sopilka (flute), which sounds lyrical, stirring and grandiose.
For musicians and ensembles wishing to perform this version of the anthem, the sheet music is available on request by emailing the composer.
