Candlelit concerts

  • Kyiv, Lviv, Ukraine
  • 2024

Role: composer, arranger, pianist

Candlelight Concerts is a landmark series of performances by Mariia Yaremak, which took place in October 2024 in Lviv (27 October) and Kyiv (30 October). The project formed part of the large-scale ‘Ukrainian Fantasy’ concept, which arose from a desire to create powerful soundtrack music reminiscent of “The Lord of the Rings” or “Harry Potter” in atmosphere, but rooted in purely Ukrainian traditions and legends.

The idea behind the project was to create a cosy, intimate fairy tale, with the music performed by a string quartet and piano by the light of thousands of candles. The visual magic of the evening was complemented by a mini-exhibition of fairy-tale illustrations by the artist Oleksandra Dikaya, allowing the audience to immerse themselves fully in the musical storytelling.

The musical programme included both contemporary arrangements of traditional Ukrainian melodies and Mariia’s own compositions, which tell stories of the past, the present and dreams of the future.

Joining Mariia on stage was a quartet comprising Marynka Hromadska, Olena Mayboroda, Anna Buroi and Bohdana Kalichak, as well as vocalists Andriana-Yaroslava Saienko and Angelina Bukovska.

The event was a resounding organic success: all tickets were sold out well before the start without any paid advertising.

In Lviv, due to the huge demand, the aisles had to be completely blocked off with chairs and the balcony, which had not originally been planned for use, had to be prepared at short notice.

In Kyiv, demand was so high that there was simply no physical space left in the hall for any more chairs.
